A member of Chicago’s historic landmark’s East Lake Shore Drive District, the 1929 Benjamin Marshall designed Drake Tower is an elegant, prewar building with stunning lake views and just steps away from The Magnificent Mile. For this complete gut renovation, the condominium owners worked with Northworks Architects + Planners to delicately weave the elegant charm of the building into a new 2,600 square foot luxury interior space with sleek modern sensibilities. The existing unit was demolished in order to allow for a new interior layout, new SpacePak air conditioning system, all new electrical and plumbing. The removal of the original windows is occurring simultaneously with installation of new windows. The completed unit will feature 3 bedrooms with attached office space, 3 bathrooms, a powder room, living room, dining room and a kitchen with a butler’s pantry.
While all of our projects present interesting challenges, constructing within historic properties always provides us with something never encountered before. A notable challenge for this project is hoisting the materials up to the 24th floor using the original staffed freight elevator. Special planning and coordination between the LRG team, building management and subcontractors has been necessary to meet the height and weight limitations of the elevator without impacting construction progress.
